In Tintin in America (1932), the hero confirms his vocation as a righter of wrongs, opposing the mafioso Al Capone, the Chicago gangsters, and crooks of every kind. Even then, Hergé displays a generous view of the world, denouncing, for example, white people for their behavior toward the Red Indians. Tintin’s fame extends beyond the Atlantic. So much so that when he arrives in Chicago, in the midst of Prohibition, all the bandits and their associates prepare for him a decidedly uncomfortable reception.
