Allan is the archetype of the scoundrel, ready to do anything to achieve his ends. A real gangster’s face—that’s how you could describe Allan Thompson’s visage. With a shifty eye and a thick Robert Mitchum–style eyebrow, his look feels familiar. He alone sums up all the film-noir tough guys, the lawless crooks, with a cigarette perpetually clamped between his lips. His weakness for alcohol is well known, hence the presence of this bottle with its obvious contents. “Single malt” and “blended” were often the temptations for an old sea dog who, in this scene, nonetheless remains surprisingly sober.
